Karnataka By-Poll Counting Begins


Vote counting began on Tuesday for the bye-elections held on December 27 in eight assembly constituencies of Karnataka, amid tight security cover.
The fate of 73 aspirants, which include four Ministers; Umesh Katti (Hukkeri), Balachandra Jarakiholi (Arabhavi), K Shivanagowda Naik (Devadurga), Anand Asnotikar (Karwar) and former Minister C Chennigappa will be known by today afternoon. C Chennigappa fought against Anita, wife of the former Chief Minister and JDS leader H D Kumaraswamy,
About 72 per cent of the 13.649 lakh electorate exercised their franchise. Seven seats remained vacant due to the successful launch of the “Operation Lotus” by the BJP, engineering defections from Congress and JDS.
The bye-election in Maddur was held following the death of the JDS sitting member M S Siddaraju. JDS fielded Kalpana, widow of Siddaraju to cash in on the sympathy vote.
The outcome of the by-poll will test the “Operation Lotus” which was launched to get the majority in the 224 member Assembly. The BJP currently has 109 members, excluding the Speaker, and requires 113 members for a simple majority.
Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa led government is surviving on the support of six independents.
